Day 8: National EnglishToffee Day

Today is National English Toffee Day. As I thought about my sweet for the day, I immediately thought about chopped Heath bar sprinkled on frozen yogurt. If you haven't noticed, the business of "serve yourself frozen yogurt topped with any topping imaginable" is booming. These places are T-R-O-U-B-L-E for the person who has little or no self control. The cups that they use are huge so most people start off with multiple servings of "Fro Yo" and then top it off with candy, cookies, brownies and hot fudge. Here are a few of my tried and true tips to help you become a healthier eater:
1. Portion control is the key. No food is off limits IN MODERATION! Always use a small plate or bowl when eating. A small full bowl seems much more satisfying than a large half empty bowl - even though it is the same portion size.
2. Be aware of serving sizes listed on the food packaging. If you don't have a kitchen scale to weigh your food and show your calories, then get one. You would be surprised how different your idea of a serving size is to the actual serving size. (Target carries food scales in various sizes and price ranges)
3. Instead of going to the "Fro Yo" place, make your own at home. I keep frozen yogurt (or light double churn ice cream) in my freezer. Pick out your favorite candy toppings and buy them in the snack size portions. Chop or crush and store in plastic ziplock containers in the freezer. When you're in the mood, scoop a serving of yogurt in a small bowl and top with a tablespoon of topping. (My favorites are Heath bar, Whoppers, Oreos, or Butterfinger.). You then have yourself a sweet treat without overdoing the calories or breaking the bank!!
